How to Make a Bird Feeder

Jul 20, 2009 07:20 PM

If you want to attract birds to your garden, but don't want to spend loads of money doing it, read this how to. It demonstrates a simple way of creating a bird feeder from simple kitchen ingredients. This will prove invaluable to hungry birds during the cold winter months - and it is fun, too.

Ingredients

  • Lard
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Birdseed

Poke a hole in the bottom of the yogurt pot and put the string through it. Tie a knot in the string on the inside of the yogurt pot.

Melt the lard in a pan on the hob. Take it off the hob and stir in the breadcrumbs and birdseed.

Spoon the mixture into the yogurt pot and wait for it to cool down. When the mixture has gone hard, take the bird feeder outside and hang it in a tree.

Tips

  • When the bird-food has been eaten, repeat the whole process again.
  • Find out what type of birdseed you want to use. Different birds like different seed.

    • For instance, goldfinches like thistle seeds, because their natural food is cone flowers. Chickadees have a preference for sunflower seeds.

Things You'll Need

  • A yogurt pot
  • String
